XXIII Antonio Binimelis Memorial Lecture

Center of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian & Latin American Studies (CSPILAS), Jawaharlal Nehru University organizes Antonio Binimelis Memorial Lecture every year in the memory of Dr. Antonio Binimelis Sagrera, who was an eminent scholar from Spain. After having earned Doctorate in Greek and Latin, Dr. Binimelis came to India to study Sanskrit and obtained another Doctorate in “Alankaras” (Figuras Retóricas). He started Spanish Studies in India and was the Founder of CSPILAS, then Center of Spanish Studies, JNU. Most of the senior faculty members this Center have had the privilege of being his students.
Since Dr. Binimelis was originally from Mallorca, Spain, the University of Islas Baleares, Palma de Mallorca, was the first university of Spain to sign an MoU with Jawaharlal Nehru University to honour the contribution of this great scholar in promoting the Spanish Studies in India. Dr. Binimelis passed away in 1983.
To foster better understanding about the Hispanic world and India and Indo-Hispanic relations, the CSPILAS, JNU every year invites an eminent scholar to deliver memorial lecture that is well attended by students, academicians and diplomats from the Hispanic world.
This year the talk will be delivered by Dr. Carlos Gohn, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil on topic entitled “As they Saw India: The Case of a Soap-Opera in Brazil”. Dr. Gohn holds PhD in comparative literature and has been working with Inter cultural studies: India – Brazil. He has published several books and articles on translation on various subject areas. Some of them are: A tradução da Biblia, Stories of Joseph of Egypt & of Moses. He has played an active role in the Center for Studies on India at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Brazil where he is full time professor.
